The Government of The Bahamas, in partnership with the Government of India and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), officially opened the new state of the art Hurricane Shelter and Community Centre in Central Pines, Abaco on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
This facility is one of several hurricane shelters being developed throughout the islands with plans underway to construct eight additional shelters throughout the Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
The 12,000 sq ft. building is elevated two feet above sea level and has the capacity to accommodate up to 800 people during a storm.
Features of the facility include an industrial kitchen, male and female bathrooms with showers, office spaces for emergency personnel, a standby generator and other amenities that enhance its functionality to serve the community in the event of a hurricane.
Built to withstand Category 5 hurricane conditions and winds exceeding 200 miles per hour, the shelter serves as a major asset in safety for the local residents.
This project was made possible through a $1 million contribution from the Government of India provided via a UNDP initiative along with additional support from the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China.
