Colina and Bahamas AIDS Foundation Collaborate for the 18th Annual Red Ribbon Ball

Before the world turns its attention on December 1 to HIV/AIDS and those living with and affected by the disease, The Bahamas’ leading life and health insurance provider is already making preparations for the country's most compelling gala.

What does a glittering entertainment spectacle have to do with AIDS? Turns out, Quite a lot.

The Red Ribbon Ball represents Colina Insurance Limited’s vision for corporate philanthropy and, now in its 18th year, is The Bahamas’ largest annual AIDS awareness event and the major fundraiser for The AIDS Foundation of The Bahamas. The 2011 ball is a masquerade event. Our theme, Removing the Mask, emphasizes the continuing need to eliminate the stigma surrounding the condition.

Colina’s longstanding involvement with the Red Ribbon ball dates back to 1994 when legacy company Imperial Life Financial signed a sponsorship accord with the AIDS Foundation of The Bahamas to commit human and financial resources in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

The company began a series of workshops to increase public awareness and launched the Red Ribbon Ball. In 1999, the company donated a three-building complex in Nassau to the Foundation to be used to support its work.

The Red Ribbon Ball has netted more than $800,000 since inception. Funds from the annual gala have been used to:

  • Provide medication to indigent HIV-positive pregnant mothers and their babies, significantly reducing the rate of transmission from mother to baby;
  • Fund an afterschool programme (mentorship, medication and academic assistance) for adolescents living with HIV;
  • Fund education and training programmes;
  • Increase awareness programmes and public service announcements;
  • Refurbish its headquarters which is used as a resource and counseling centre; and
  • Provide help and support to persons living with HIV/AIDS.

 Today, in our 18th year of activism, and with the 2011 Ball scheduled for November 12, Colina Insurance Limited continues this legacy of hope as, alongside corporate partners, we continue to take the lead in drawing attention and driving compassion to the cause of HIV/AIDS.
