Wednesday, June 18, 2025 will be an historic one in medical achievement for the country -- a father will donate one of his kidneys to his son during a kidney transplant procedure at the Princess Margaret Hospital.
Officials of the Public Hospitals Authority held a press conference to shed light on the groundbreaking medical moment, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025 at the PMH boardroom.
It was revealed that a 66-year-old father would donate a kidney to his 44-year-old son in a seven-hour operation. Their names are being with witheld, due to privacy and safety protocols.
This procedure was announced by the Hon. Dr. Michael Darville, the Minister of Health and Wellness during his contribution to the Budget Debate in the House of Assembly on Monday, June 16, 2025.
Dr. Darville said he was pleased to report to parliament, that after two years of preparatory work, funding for the ministry’s Organ Transplant Program is now a line item in the National Budget.
“Finally, the Princess Margaret Hospital is able to offer living donor transplantation bringing new hope to those living with kidney disease,” he told parliament.
And, on Wednesday, lead consultants at the PMH along with three distinguished transplant surgeons from Trinidad and Barbados will perform a live donor kidney transplant on a Bahamian patient.
“This would be a part of the official launch of my Ministry’s long awaited Kidney Transplant Program,” stated Dr. Darville. “This is certainly exciting news for The Bahamas and patients suffering from kidney disease across the country. It has been a long journey to get to this point but thanks to our collective efforts and final preparations the program will be launched this week.”
