Air India Plane Crash: 'One Survivor' From Flight Carrying 242 People

An Air India plane bound for London with 244 people onboard crashed as it took off in India's northwestern city of Ahmedabad.

Local police said there was a sole survivor, The Telegraph reports. The man, who was sat in seat 11A, is now receiving treatment in hospital.

It is not clear how he survived the fiery crash after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, bound for London, Gatwick, collided with a medical college dorm in the suburb of the Indian city of Ahmedabad, and erupted into flames.

Here's what we know:

- More than 200 bodies recovered from the crash site.
- The plane crashed into a residential area. It is not yet known if there are casualties on the ground.
- On board were: 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national and seven Portuguese nationals.
- Flight AI171 was travelling from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick.
- The aircraft is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
