To conclude Coastal Awareness Month, the Ministry of Tourism, Investments and Aviation (MOTIA) hosted an awards presentation on Thursday, May 7, 2025 at the C.A. Smith Building Complex to recognise the winners of the Coastal Awareness Schools Poster Competition.
Each year, the month of April is observed as Coastal Awareness Month, when MOTIA partners with organisations such as the Keep Grand Bahama Clean Committee, Litter Free Bahamas, the Bahamas National Trust, and other civic organisations to promote the protection and preservation of The Bahamas coastal environment.
A wide range of educational and environmental activities are held during the month, including beach cleanups, mangrove planting, and school and community presentations. One of the major highlights is the school's poster competition, which invites students to creatively express a selected environmental theme through artwork.
This year’s theme, “Protecting Our Coastline, Preserving Our Future,” inspired students to showcase their artistic talents, while raising awareness about the critical importance of coastal conservation.
Entries were submitted from two categories: the primary school division (Grades 4–6) and the junior high school division (Grades 7–9).
Winners of the competition:

Jermaine Johnson, MOTIA Coordinator and Manager of the Grand Bahama Sustainable Tourism Development Department, expressed how impressed he was by the students' level of thought and creativity. He noted that their artwork clearly reflected a strong understanding of the theme. Johnson added that the students' ability to communicate such meaningful messages through their art was inspiring.
Coastal Awareness Month holds special significance for The Bahamas, where the ocean plays a vital role in both tourism and daily life. By recognising this, the Government of The Bahamas through MOTIA remains committed to educating the public, raising awareness, and promoting action to protect the country’s natural resources for future generations.
