Tue, Jun 11th 2024, 10:11 AM

THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FROM 9:10 AM TO 10:40 AM, TUESDAY 11TH JUNE, 2024.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR BIMINI AND NORTH ANDROS ALONG WITH ADJACENT WATERS AND CAYS.

THE SEVERE WEATHER WARNING FOR GRAND BAHAMA, AND THE SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR THE BERRY ISLANDS, HAVE BEEN DISCONTINUED. SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS HAVE EITHER MOVED NORTHEASTWARDS, OR WEAKENED ACROSS THESE AREAS.

AT 9:00 AM, LIGHTNING DETECTION, RADAR, AND SATELLITE IMAGERY DEPICTED A DEVELOPING CLUSTER OF SHOWERS AND EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS OVER THE GULF STREAM AND THE NORTHERN GREAT BAHAMA BANK, MOVING EASTWARDS TOWARD AND ACROSS THE WATCH AREAS. THESE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH A MID TO UPPER LEVEL TROUGH, INTERACTING WITH A MOIST AIRMASS ACROSS THE AREA.

SOME OF THESE SHOWERS WILL BE LOCALLY HEAVY AND THUNDERSTORMS STRONG TO SEVERE AT TIMES CAUSING STRONG GUSTY WINDS, DANGEROUS LIGHTNING, HEAVY DOWNPOURS, HAIL, AND POSSIBLE WATERSPOUT OR TORNADIC ACTIVITY. LOCALIZED FLOODING IS ALSO POSSIBLE DURING THE PASSAGE OF THESE STORMS.

BOATERS IN THE WATCH AREAS SHOULD BEGIN TO SEEK SAFE HARBOUR. RESIDENTS IN THE WATCH AREAS SHOULD REMAIN INDOORS AND AWAY FROM WINDOWS WHEN CONDITIONS WORSEN. RESIDENTS SHOULD NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER TREES OR IN WATER AS THESE CAN BECOME LIGHTNING CONDUCTORS.
