AUTO DEALER SUFFERS 'WORST EVER MONTH'

A BAHAMIAN auto dealer yesterday said August 2011 was "the worst month" it had ever experienced for new car sales since opening its doors in 1996, the industry overall seeing an almost 11 per cent year-over-year decline against 2010 comparatives.

Andrew Barr, sales manager at Friendly Motors, told Tribune Business that in the aftermath of the dramatic tax increases contained in the 2010-2011 Budget, Bahamian new car dealers were facing a "double whammy" - banks reluctant to lend, and consumers not willing to borrow, significant sums of $50,000 or more for vehicles.
