Wed, May 15th 2024, 02:54 PM

THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FROM 2:40 PM TO 3:40 PM, WEDNESDAY 15TH MAY 2024.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR GRAND BAHAMA AND BIMINI ALONG WITH THEIR ADJACENT WATERS.

AT 2:15 PM, LIGHTNING DETECTION, RADAR, AND SATELLITE IMAGERY DEPICTED AN ORGANIZED LINE OF HEAVY SHOWERS AND EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS MOVING OFF OF THE FLORIDA COAST AND INTO THE GULF STREAM. THESE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE CURRENTLY LOCATED LESS THAN 50 NAUTICAL MILES FROM THE WATCH AREAS AND ARE MOVING EASTWARDS. THESE SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH A PRE-FRONTAL TROUGH ACCOMPANIED BY FAVORABLE CONVECTIVE CONDITIONS.

SOME OF THESE SHOWERS WILL BE LOCALLY HEAVY AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE STRONG TO SEVERE AT TIMES CAUSING STRONG GUSTY WINDS, DANGEROUS LIGHTNING, HEAVY DOWNPOURS, AND WATERSPOUT ACTIVITY. LOCALIZED FLOODING IS ALSO POSSIBLE DURING THESE STORMS.

BOATERS IN THE WATCH AREAS, ESPECIALLY THOSE IN THE GULF STREAM, SHOULD SEEK SAFE HARBOUR, AND RESIDENTS SHOULD REMAIN INDOORS AND AWAY FROM WINDOWS WHEN CONDITIONS WORSEN. RESIDENTS SHOULD NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER TREES OR IN WATER AS THESE CAN BECOME LIGHTNING CONDUCTORS.
