LCIS Holds 60th Anniversary Founders' Day Assembly

On Friday 27 January, Lyford Cay International School celebrated 60 years as an educational institution with a Founders’ Day assembly at the school’s Upper School campus off Western Road. Students, parents, teachers and staff of the school, as well asinvited guests were in attendance, including Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. I Chester Cooper,Minister of State for Education and Technical & Vocational Training, Hon. Zane Lightbourne,Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Technical & VocationalTraining, Mr Ricardo Deveaux, representatives from the US Embassy in Nassau, and BritishHigh Commissioner Mr Thomas Hartley.

During the event, long-serving employees of the school were recognised as well as alumniparents and a new Lyford Lyfer. Lyford Lyfers are students who attend LCIS from Junior Pre-Kindergarten (age 3) through to Grade 12. Principal David Mindorff and Deputy PrimeMinister Cooper gave remarks during the ceremony.

“LCIS is not just a school. It is a fundamental plank in the development of our country. Whenone considers the state of development of the Western end of the island, much of that canbe credited to the existence of the Lyford Cay International School,” said Deputy PrimeMinister Cooper.

The school has been celebrating this significant milestone in its history throughout the 2022-23 school year with alumni campaigns and special events.

Since it’s founding in 1962, LCIS has undergone incredible development. The school hasbeen transformed from a small community school to an education institution accredited bythe Council of International Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges,and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Organization. LCIS is one of less than 50 schools inthe world authorised to offer all four IB curriculum frameworks - the Primary YearsProgramme, Middle Years Programme, Diploma Programme and Career-RelatedProgramme, which are seen as the best preparation for students to foster 21st Century skillssuch as critical thinking, collaboration and communication.

In 2021, LCIS opened a new state-of-the-art Upper School campus for students in Grades 7-12 located atop Mahogany Hill, just a 10-minute walk from the original campus within thegated community of Lyford Cay.

Today, LCIS has over 400 students from ages 18 months (Preschool) to 18 years old. Theschool now has 100 faculty and staff, 64% of whom have advanced degrees. The schoolcommunity has 45 nationalities represented, and 14 languages are spoken between homeand school.

“Our school has always been a beacon of high-quality education on the island, but it hasalso been a symbol of generosity and kindness. Our not-for-profit school makes well over$785,000 available for scholarships for Bahamian students to attend annually, and this figureexceeds $1 million when the children of Bahamian faculty and staff are included. Eachstudent from Grades 7 to 12 engages in some form of community service throughout theschool year, and children in our Lower School are guided and encouraged to find ways topositively impact our community as well,” said Principal Mindorff, a leading internationalscience educator with six IB textbooks published to date.

Mindorff further noted that a critical part of the school’s strategic vision for the futureconsists of continued growth in opportunities for Bahamian children to benefit fromthe world-class education the school provides. He announced the launch of theBahamian Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship programme, which will provide ten (10)new scholarships ranging from 25% to 100% of tuition.

“I am excited to learn of the school’s new Bahamian Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarshipprogramme and the impact it will have on children who not normally be able to attend theschool. I am hopeful that Family Island students will feature prominently in the recipients ofthese new scholarships,” said Deputy Prime Minister Cooper.
