Minister Moxey opens historic Northern Bahamas Volleyball Championships

Minister for Grand Bahama, the Hon. Ginger Moxey thanked all of the organizers for making sporting history in Grand Bahama with hosting of the first ever High School Volleyball Championships, held in Freeport, Grand Bahama, last week.  In opening the tournament at St. George's High School on Friday, December 2, 2022, Minister Moxey called the event “a big deal” for the children of Grand Bahama and Abaco.

“When I look around at this gym with these athletes and coaches, I can’t help but consider the fact that these athletes were unable to actually play sports in about four years because of Hurricane Dorian and COVID lockdowns,” said Minister Moxey.

“To me, that’s remarkable! That means that our young people have lost so many years when it comes to being able to get together and play sports. Grand Bahama and Abaco, the story of what we’ve gone through... and to see you here today, is a miracle within itself.”

The Northern Bahamas High School Volleyball Championships featured teams from both Grand Bahama and Abaco, specifically; Sunland Baptist Academy, Agape Christian School (Abaco), P.J. Bethel High School (Abaco), Eight Mile Rock High School, S.C. Bootle Sr. High School (Abaco), Lucayan International School, Bishop Michael Eldon High School, Tabernacle Baptist Academy, Jack Hayward High School, St. Georges High School, and Forest Heights Academy (Abaco).

Schools from Bimini were unable to participate in the first championships, but there have been indications that teams from Bimini will take part in the second annual Northern Bahamas High School Volleyball Championships.

“I want to welcome those athletes from Abaco to Grand Bahama,” said Minister Moxey. “I hope that you enjoy your time here with us and I’m sure that it will be a wonderful experience that we can have every year.“To the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, you have been continually setting the bar at a high standard. To know that we are focusing on our young people, is remarkable. I also want to thank the Ministry of Education in partnering with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture for this event.

“I believe that Grand Bahama and Abaco are islands that are tied at ‘the hips’ because we’ve both gone through so much with Hurricane Dorian. But we’re still rebuilding and recovering. In the midst of all of that I want us to also find the joy in sports, particularly in the game of volleyball.
 “I want us to find joy in collaboration and partnerships.”

Minister Moxey is hopeful that the High School Volleyball championships would make the rounds in all of the Northern Bahamas over the years, allowing each island an opportunity to host the event.

Also congratulating the organizers, coaches and athletes on the launch of the High School Volleyball Championships was Senator James Turner, who encouraged the athletes to be prepared to take advantage of opportunities in their lives.

“My dream is that every student in The Bahamas gets to know what a blessing is and what it feels like to be blessed,” said Senator Turner.
