The Organization for Responsible Governance (ORG) is excited to announce the launch of its Active Citizens Bahamas (ACB) campaign.

The campaign’s goal is to train Bahamians on how to use the power of their voice andcollective actions to create positive changes in their communities and therefore, thecountry at large. Active Citizens Bahamas will visit several islands and engage locals ofall ages in three initiatives.

The first is the National Outreach Series which involves empowerment discussions thatwill teach groups about the citizens’ role in community building. It will promote theconcept of “micro actions” as the small things people can do daily to over time lead to astronger community.

The Community Focus Group Series is the second initiative and will focus on collectinginformation from citizens about their island’s most pressing challenges. These sessionswill give locals an opportunity to share their perspectives on creating plans to addressthese challenges as a community.

With the information gathered from community members, ORG will develop anAdvocacy Toolkit, the third initiative, to equip citizens and civic organizations with theskills and tools needed to advocate for change around particular challenges, as well asconnect with local leaders.

The Active Citizens Bahamas campaign utilizes a ‘teach, listen, train’ model that allowsa two-way exchange of knowledge between ORG and Bahamian citizens. ACB createspathways to action that factor in the realities and limitations locals face in moving towardsocial development.

“We have always put the need for active and responsible citizens high on our list ofaccountable governance priorities for The Bahamas,” said ORG Assistant DirectorSteffon Evans.

“The campaign puts us in a unique position to connect on a meaningful level with ourcommunities and tap into their passion and dedication to work together to create abrighter outlook for future generations of Bahamians.”

Studies on citizen engagement as a governance reform tool have shown that whencitizens are effectively engaged, there is improved compliance, public service delivery, public financial management, social inclusion, empowerment and in the long-run,improved governance.
