ALERT #16 ON TROPICALSTORM NICOLE, ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY AT 2 AM EST, WEDNESDAY 9TH NOVEMBER, 2022.

NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS AND PORTIONS OF THE EAST COAST OF FLORIDA...

 ...WEATHER CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO DETERIORATE….. LIFE-THREATENING SEA CONDITIONS PERSIST IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS…

 A HURRICANEWARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT  FOR THE ISLANDSOF GRAND  BAHAMA, ABACO, BIMINI, AND THE BERRY ISLANDS.

 A HURRICANE WARNING MEANS THAT HURRICANE CONDITIONS COULD BE EXPERIENCED IN THE ABOVE-MENTIONED ISLANDS WITHIN 36 HOURS.

 A TROPICALSTORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE ISLANDS OF ELEUTHERA, NEW PROVIDENCE AND ANDROS.

 A TROPICALSTORM WARNING MEANSTHAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS    COULD BE EXPERIENCED IN THE ABOVE-MENTIONED ISLANDS WITHIN 36 HOURS.

AT 1 AM EST, THE CENTEROF TROPICAL STORM NICOLE WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 26.9° DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 75.4° DEGREES WEST, OR ABOUT:

  • 100 MILES EAST-NORTHEAST OF HOPE TOWN, ABACO
  • 150 MILES EAST-NORTHEAST OF EAST END, GRAND BAHAMA
  • 125 MILES NORTHEAST OF GOVERNOR’S HARBOUR,ELEUTHERA
  • 175 MILES NORTHEAST OF NEW PROVIDENCE
  • AND 200 MILES NORTHEAST OF NICHOLL’STOWN, ANDROS.

NICOLE IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-SOUTHWEST NEAR 11 MPH.  A WEST-SOUTHWEST TO WESTWARD MOTION IS EXPECTED THROUGH TODAY.  A WEST-NORTHWEST MOTION IS FORECAST TO BEGIN TONIGHT, FOLLOWED BY A TURN TOWARD THE NORTHWEST AND NORTH ON THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT.

 ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE CENTER OF NICOLE WILL APPROACH THE NORTHWESTERN BAHAMAS THIS MORNING, MOVE NEAR OR OVER THOSE ISLANDS BY THIS AFTERNOON, AND APPROACH THE EAST COAST OF FLORIDA WITHIN THE HURRICANE WARNING AREA TONIGHT OR EARLY THURSDAY.  NICOLE'S CENTER IS THEN EXPECTED TO MOVE ACROSS CENTRAL AND NORTHERN FLORIDA INTO SOUTHERN GEORGIA THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT.

 MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 70 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS.  SOME STRENGTHENING IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT DAY OR SO, AND NICOLE IS FORECAST TO BECOME A HURRICANE LATER TODAY AND REMAIN A HURRICANE WHEN IT REACHES THE EAST COAST OF FLORIDA.

 TROPICAL-STORM-FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 380 MILES FROM THE CENTER.

 STORM SURGE COULD RAISE WATER LEVELS BY AS MUCH AS 4 TO 6 FEET ABOVE NORMAL TIDE LEVELS ALONG THE IMMEDIATECOAST IN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS.

 LARGE SWELLS GENERATED BY NICOLE WILL AFFECT THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS. THESE SWELLS ARE LIKELY TO CAUSE LIFE-THREATENING SURF AND RIP CURRENT CONDITIONS.

 NICOLE IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF 3 TO 5 INCHES WITH LOCALIZED HIGHER AMOUNTS OF UP TO 8 INCHES ACROSS THE NORTHWEST BAHAMASTODAY THROUGH FRIDAY.

 THE FORMATION OF WATERSPOUTS AND TORNADOS ARE POSSIBLE DURING THE PASSAGE OF NICOLE THROUGH THE BAHAMAS.  BOATERS ARE ADVISED TO REMAIN IN PORT OR MOVE VESSELS TO SAFE HARBOUR.

 RESIDENTS, PARTICULARLY ON THE ISLANDS OF GRAND BAHAMA, ABACO, BIMINI AND THE BERRY ISLANDS SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR POSSIBLE HURRICANE CONDITIONS EXPECTED EARLY WEDNESDAY MORNING.

 INTERESTS IN THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS SHOULD CONTINUE TO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF NICOLE.
