NASSAU, Bahamas - The Zonta Club of New Providence is celebrating 25 years of service and advocacy, marking decades of significant shifts in the organization and considerable growth in building a better world for women and girls.
In honour of the occasion, the organization will be hosting various activities around its causes, including a silver anniversary luncheon on September 25th, 2022 to honour and celebrate those who have supported and pushed the club forward over the years.
“We have accomplished a lot since our start in 1997, as a team of ambitious and committed women with a common goal and a determination to continue the works of women and organizations like the Women’s Suffrage Movement, who have paved the way for us” said ZCNP President Yvette Ingraham. “After 25 years, we are still committed to advocating for women’s rights and equality through service and advocacy, knowing that we as a country will be unable to achieve our full potential economically, socially and politically without the full participation of women at every level.”
Throughout the decades, the club has initiated several annual projects that have become signature events in The Bahamas, including the “Say No” to violence against women and children 16 Days of Activism, where women throughout New Providence, including professional working women, students and members of law enforcement collaborate to ‘paint the town orange’ by ribbon tying trees around town with orange bows as a symbol against domestic violence.
“Our work is ambitious, yes, but it is essential,” said Ingraham. “We look forward to a bright future where women are not limited by gender bias. We must see reforms in laws and policies that affect the growth of women - who remain the majority in the local population - and we must also lead innovation into new economies and steer continued development into a more gender inclusive environment.”
The ZCNP is also known for its Workforce Readiness Programme, which equips unemployed women with the skills to attract and retain employment.
The silver anniversary celebrations will continue with the theme to empower women across The Bahamas during a kick-off forum on “Trafficking in Persons”, among other initiatives to push the movement forward.
