The government hopes that people living in temporary domes in Spring City, Abaco, will vacate by the end of summer, Disaster Reconstruction Authority (DRA) Executive Chairman Alex Storr said yesterday. Minister of Transport and Housing JoBeth Coleby-Davis said last week the government will soon give notice to those residents.

When asked about the deadline for those residents to vacate, Storr said, “There is a task force that is dealing with that which we are part of. No firm date has been determined but it is hoped before the end of summer.”

Storr said the domes at that site will likely be disassembled and stored until Cabinet makes a final decision on their use.

The domes were erected after Hurricane Dorian in 2019. While 250 domes were supposed to be built across Abaco and Grand Bahama, fewer than 100 were completed.

Storr said yesterday, the remaining domes are still in shipping containers and warehouses.

“We are working to consolidate in order to minimize those associated costs,” he said.

“This will also be a part of the inventory process [for the DRA’s financial audit].”

Storr said the last time he checked, roughly $1 million in fees were incurred as a result of the storage of the domes.

“We were able to negotiate an agreement to bring it down considerably,” he said.

Storr did not indicate how much the fees were brought down to.

The uncompleted domes project cost about $6.4 million.
