Kenton Dion Knowles "Emperor" Gets Bail

Wed, Oct 1st 2008, 12:00 AM

A judge Tuesday freed murder accused Kenton Dion Knowles on $50,000 bail, despite concern from a prosecutor that he is a flight risk and should remain in custody. Knowles, who is better known by the street name "Emperor", was arrested for the murder of his nephew, Kendal Knowles, on July 3.

Officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit found Knowles and his girlfriend, Simone Bethel, in an apartment on Boatswain Road, off Carmichael Road.

According to Darnelle Dorsette, the prosecutor, police had been looking for Knowles since his nephew's shooting death in August 2007.

She said Knowles did not give himself up to police, although it was widely publicized that he was a person of interest in the case. Dorsette said police considered Knowles a fugitive and they demonstrated this by charging Bethel with harboring him.

However, Acting Supreme Court Justice Elliot Lockhart said that because Knowles did not turn himself into police did not mean that he was a flight risk. He pointed out that prosecutors had produced no evidence that Knowles had fled the country while he was being sought by police.

Dorsette said she planned to appeal the decision, but Knowles' bail was approved before the appeal was filed.

Knowles, a carpenter, must report to the Fox Hill Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays as a condition of bail. He was also warned not to interfere with the witnesses in the case either directly or indirectly.

A preliminary inquiry to determine whether there is enough evidence for Knowles to stand trial on the murder charge has not begun in the magistrate's court.

However, Bethel's harboring a fugitive case started this month before Magistrate Linda Virgill.

She was in court for the bail hearing and smiled when Justice Lockhart granted the bail application.

Murrio Ducille represented Knowles.
