God has your back

If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you – you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’. For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. – Mark 6:30-32

Human nature, being the way it is, the minute the news gets out that someone has died, in many cases, the immediate question is “What they died from?” or “What happened?”. How many times have I heard in my early childhood the answer to these questions was the same – “slow fretation – chile they fret dey self to death.”

Then they would go into story after story of how mostly worrying about a spouse’s errant ways led them to the grave. It really was not about clothes, food, shelter or money, but failed relationships.

In all our lives there have been situations that cause us to be alarmed and concerned – and rightfully so. Sickness in the home, financial barriers due to loss of income, stress on our jobs, dysfunctional families and yes, the ever-presence of lack.

Our text today concludes the teachings of Jesus in this sixth chapter of Matthew. He opens up with teaching about giving to the needy, then on to prayer and fasting giving us the model prayer of how to pray – Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. … Continuing, we are admonished not to be just taken up with amassing wealth and the material things of this world but strive for that which is heavenly.

Today, where are you on the rungs of the “worry ladder”? Are you climbing higher and higher into the “worry sphere” causing you to lose your balance and fall to the abyss of peril? Your life is too precious to gamble it on things sometimes that are really are not worth it.

No man can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other. You can’t hold on to faith and worry at the same time – you are asking for disaster.

Stop worrying about your children, your husband/wife, your in-laws, what’s not yours, your this and your that, let it, them, and the other go. It’s election time, stop worrying about the 16th and try to do the best and be the best you can today.
