Players ready to shine today in All-star game

Sat, Jul 16th 2011, 11:59 AM

The best-of-the-best from both the women and men's division in the Bahamas Government Departmental Softball Association (BGDSA) will take to the field today, playing in the annual All-Star Games which are being held in honor of Yvonne Taylor.

The first of three games scheduled will start at 1 p.m. at the Baillou Hills Sporting Complex. Top female players will be split in two and play under the Secretary or the Assistant Secretary's Divisions, while the men's play will have four teams, the usual President and Vice President as well as the Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer.
President Thora Sweeting is encouraged with the responses received from the listed players, saying that the games this year will be the best ever.

"Everyone seems to be encouraged and that is a positive sign," said Sweeting. "We are expecting all the named players to come out and participate in a fun-filled day. The games are going to be intense because the players all want to have bragging rights when the games are over. So the excitement level is up high.

"There will be two All-Star games for men this is because (of) the set-up of the league in the year. The way the two divisions are set up are A and B. The B division could not have shined without the help of the A division and vice versa. The B division you have the lower teams but the level of the game is still high. So you can expect two exciting games from that side and a thriller from the womens."

The B division will play first on Saturday, followed by the A and the annual awards ceremony. Top players from 2010 and mid-way through this season will receive their hardware from the excellent performance turned in. The best batter award was won by Alcott Forbes, who had 46 hits, nine of which were home-runs, scored 48 runs and batted in 29 for an average of 676. Darrell Ferguson was second with a 636 average, 23 runs and 28 hits. A total of 14 runs batted in (RBI) were achieved by Ferguson in 2010.  Forbes also had the most hits and runs last season. The most RBIs as well as home-runs were turned in by Godfrey Willie. The pitcher collecting the most wins was Darren Mortimer from the Police Chiefs. He closed with a win/loss record of 9-3.

This season the top three batters in the men's B division are John Woodside, Dennis Johnson and Greg Ferguson.  Woodside leads after 11 games with an average of 652. He has nine runs, 15 hits and three runs batted in. Teammate Johnson is at 600 with 15 runs, 18 hits and 12 RBIs. The most hits is 23, that connection was made by Terran Fulford.

Gary Hanna Jr. has 22 followed by Greg Ferguson and Godwin Taylor with 22 and 21, respectively. Three players are tied at 18 in that division. Fulford also have the most runs so far on the season, 23, Hanna Jr  and Taylor both have 17 and Ferguson 16.

On the women's end Della Davis of the Invaders has an average of 714, with five runs and 10 hits. Even though Maryann Ferguson of the Defense Force Waves has more runs than Davis, she sits in second with a 667 average. Zella Symonette is also at the 600 marker with 643. She is followed by Vandette Smith with 625.
