A bar owner who sold numbers without a gaming license yesterday paid a $5,000 fine to avoid spending one year in prison.

Emilus Nothelus, 52, was arrested after an undercover officer purchased a three-ball ticket from Nothelus’ Mini-Bar on the Charles Saunders Highway on July 29, according to Sergeant 2632 Kendrick Bauld.

Nothelus’ business license confines him to wholesale and retail liquor sales, Bauld told the court.

After the illegal sale, officers raided the bar and confiscated three printers and a computer.

Nothelus pleaded guilty to conducting gaming activities without the appropriate license at his arraignment before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis earlier this week.

Rolle-Davis, however, deferred sentencing.

Miranda Adderley told the court that Nothelus was remorseful. She said that the father-of-two had made a bad decision.
