For the second time this season, Bahamian professional baseball player Miami Marlins Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm has been placed on the injured list (IL) after a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan on Monday confirmed a left shoulder bone bruise.
Chisholm injured his left shoulder diving for a ball in shallow right field in the bottom of the first inning in a game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. He came up grimacing in obvious pain and was taken out of the game.
On the play, Chisholm tried to chase down a shallow fly ball off the bat of Bryce Harper and dove for the ball after sprinting from his second baseman position, but it sailed out of his reach. Chisholm stayed on the ground for about 30 seconds, before walking off clutching his left arm. Had he caught the ball, it would have been his second-highlight reel catch of the series, as he made a leaping catch off a line drive by Andrew McCutchen on Saturday.
The way Chisholm grimaced after the injury was alarming, but the preliminary X-ray came back negative on Sunday. He was not the only Marlins player to be put on the IL, as first baseman Garrett Cooper was also placed there with an elbow injury. Marlins Manager Don Mattingly said the results on both players’ injury were good.
“It was as good as we could’ve asked for with both guys,” Mattingly said.
Chisholm along with Cooper are on the 10-day IL as of Monday. The Marlins will be without their infield players for at least until July 29.
Without those players active on Monday, the team suffered its worst loss of the season when it lost 18-1 in the first game in their three-game series against the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington, DC. No score from the game last night was available at press time.
The loss on Monday kept the Marlins in the basement of the Major League Baseball (MLB) standings with a 40-54 win/loss record. They fall to a season-worst 14 games below .500. They are currently sitting in last place in the National League East division and third to last in the National League.
Chisholm walked in his only appearance in the weekend finale on Sunday and is batting .251 with 11 home runs, 34 RBIs (runs batted in) and 38 runs scored in 70 games this season – most of his damage coming from the leadoff position. He has a .315 on-base percentage, a .437 slugging percentage and a .755 on base-plus slugging percentage. He has 11 stolen bases and remains a legitimate 20-20 prospect in his first full season in the majors.
Defensively, Chisholm has 172 assists, 86 putouts and 15 errors on the season. He has a .953 fielding percentage at second base and a .928 fielding percentage at shortstop. He has been a part of 44 double plays.
