One person died and two others were injured in a traffic collision on Charles W. Saunders Highway yesterday.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mario Sweeting said the incident marked the 16th traffic fatality in The Bahamas for the year and the fourth for New Providence.

ASP Audley Peters said preliminary reports revealed that three people, two men and a woman, were traveling east on Charles W. Saunders Highway around 11 a.m. in a green Toyota RAV4 when they collided with a stationary Mack truck.

He said the front seat passenger died on the scene, and the driver and back seat passenger were taken to the hospital.

“The two males were in the front seat,” Peters said.

“One of the males in the front seat was found to be responsive and all the persons in the vehicle received injuries.

“EMS was called and on their arrival, they rendered assistance to all the passengers.

“However, the male passenger in the front seat succumbed to his injuries. The female and male were transported to the hospital via ambulance.”

Peters said police were unsure of the age of the victim, while the two injured passengers were in their 20s.

He said preliminary investigations suggest that the driver of the Toyota was speeding. The speed limit on the highway is 30 mph.
