Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Iram Lewis said yesterday that the government is preparing to start major renovations on the Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium.

The Nassau Guardian observed concrete deterioration on the pillars situated on the western side of the stadium yesterday.

The steel bars were visible on at least five pillars.

“There are plans to renovate, but it is being headed by the Ministry of Works,” Lewis said when called for comment.

“I expect it to happen in short order once all of the details are worked out. We’re working on the details now.”

He said most of the repairs will be structural.

Lewis said this will be the first repairs “on this scale” to occur at the stadium since it was opened in 2012.

“The health and safety of our people are of paramount concern but that did not prompt us,” he said referring to the recent collapse of the Surfside condo building in Florida that killed 97 people.

“We were going to do our work anyhow. We are not doing this as a result of the accident in Florida. We have to be responsible regardless of what happens anywhere else in the world. So we do our assessment and we make sure that buildings that the public occupy … we have to make sure that those buildings are safe.”
