Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?"
He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
The man said, “The woman you put here with me – she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.
– Genesis 3:8-13
Even though man had transgressed God’s command, and created a huge gulf between God and man, God did not abandon him. In his transgression, man ran from God, yet, God went looking for him. God in his love for his creation searched out Adam and his wife Eve.
Scripture tells us that God fellowshipped with Adam in the cool of the day. As usual, God went looking for the man, who had hidden himself from God. From the time of the fall, man has been running away from God as opposed to running to God.
His grace and mercy still abound today. He seeks us out and comes to us through his spirit who gathers and brings us to faith. God does this because of his love and his grace.
For this, we give thanks and praise because our loving, compassionate, and merciful God reaches out to us. As God entered the garden, he called out to the man, “Where are you?”
