Wärtsilä, the company that manufactured and installed the seven new engines in Bahamas Power and Light’s (BPL) Station A, is working with BPL to find out what happened at the station to trigger an island-wide power outage last Thursday morning.

Wärtsilä released a statement following the outage, apologizing for the incident and assuring that the company is working to understand what underlying problem led to it.
“We sincerely apologize for any inconveniences caused as a result of this outage,” the statement noted.
“Although this kind of occurrence is rare, be assured that Wärtsilä is already in the process of investigating this matter to determine the root cause of the failure, with a goal of making sure that there would not be a recurrence.”
Wärtsilä’s statement explained that the outage occurred around 2:30 a.m. and power began being restored by 3:15 a.m.
“At around 2:30 a.m. on May 20th an operational glitch at Clifton Pier Station A resulted in generating units going offline,” Wärtsilä stated.
“This event triggered an island-wide outage on New Providence. Wärtsilä together with BPL personnel worked swiftly to remedy the situation.
“Power was restored to the first group of customers at 3:15 a.m. and by 6:30 a.m., power was restored to approximately 95 percent of the customer base on New Providence.”
Station A represents some of the newest power generation in BPL’s arsenal and is the largest power plant ever built by the country’s power company.
Wärtsilä worked along with BPL employees to install seven state-of-the-art engines at the station.
