Bahamian MiLB players experience action

The last time Bahamian Minor League Baseball (MiLB) players experienced playing time on the diamond was back in 2019. Tuesday was opening night in MiLB and it signaled an end to a drought. A trio of Bahamians was in action.

Right fielder Chavez Young was in action for his team, New Hampshire Fisher Cats, in Double-A Baseball. The Grand Bahamian helped his team to an impressive 11-2 opening night victory over the Portland Sea Dogs on the road at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine.
Young finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate to go with three runs batted in (RBIs) and one run scored. He also had a stolen base. The Fisher Cats is an affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Young scored his team’s first run in the top of the second inning as they went up 1-0. The Grand Bahamian singled on a line drive to left field in the top of the seventh inning, driving in two runs and giving the Fisher Cats a 9-0 lead.
First baseman Warren Saunders helped his team, the St. Lucie Mets, to a dominating 13-3 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads at Clover Park in Port St. Lucie, Florida, in Low-A action. The St. Lucie Mets is an affiliate of the New York Mets.
Saunders, who was fourth in the batting lineup, finished 1-for-4 at the plate. His only hit came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when he drove a ball to right field for a single. He drove in Pete Crow-Armstrong as his team took a 5-2 lead. Saunders later scored when Jaylen Palmer tripled in the bottom of the seventh inning as they went up 10-2.
Third baseman Keithron Moss had a rough start for the Down East Wood Ducks in Low-A action. The 19-year-old went 0-for-4 from the plate. His team managed to pull off a road win over the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, 8-4, at the Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
The Wood Ducks did not get a hit until the third inning but scored their first run in the first inning on a Cannon Ballers’ error. They scored six runs in the seventh inning to pull away from the Cannon Ballers, leading 8-3 at the end of that inning. The Wood Ducks are owned and operated by the Texas Rangers.
The 2020 MiLB season was canceled because of the presence of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the hope that more Bahamians will be assigned to teams and experience action as the season progresses. 
Bahamian pitcher Tahnaj Thomas, who recently signed with Roc Nation Sports, is set to make his 2021 debut for the Greensboro Grasshoppers in High-A. Roc Nation also represents Bahamian Major League Baseball (MLB) player Jasrado “Jazz” Chisholm who plays for the Miami Marlins.
The Grasshoppers opened the season with a 7-5 home loss to the Hickory Crawdads at the First National Bank Field in Greensboro, North Carolina, but Thomas did not pitch.
Young, Saunders and Moss were set to be in action yesterday, but no results were available up to press time. They will be in action again today, trying to help their respective teams record victories.
