The Bahamas Department of Meteorology has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch from 10:40 AM EDT until 12:40 PM WEDNESDAY 30THSEPTEMBER, 2020.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT FOR LONG ISLAND, CROOKED ISLAND AND RUM CAY ALONG WITH THEIR ADJACENT WATERS.


AT 10:35 AM LIGHTNING DETECTOR, RADAR AND SATELLITE IMAGERY DEPICTED CLUSTERS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SHOWERS WITH EMBEDDED THUNDERSTORMS ASSOCIATED WITH A TROPICAL WAVE SOUTHWEST OF THE AREA. THE STORMS ARE MOVING TOWARDS THE MENTIONED AREAS.

SOME OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE STRONG TO SEVERE AT TIMES CAPABLE OF PRODUCING STRONG GUSTY WINDS, DANGEROUS LIGHTNING, HEAVY DOWNPOURS, HAIL AND POSSIBLE WATERSPOUT OR TORNADIC ACTIVITY. LOCALIZED FLOODING IS ALSO POSSIBLE DURING THE PASSAGE OF THESE STORMS.

BOATERS IN THE WATCH AREAS SHOULD SEEK SAFE HARBOUR AND RESIDENTS IN THE WATCH AREAS SHOULD BE PREPARED TO TAKE QUICK ACTION SHOULD CONDITIONS WORSEN.

RESIDENTS SHOULD NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER TREES OR IN WATER AS THESE CAN BECOME LIGHTNING CONDUCTORS.
