Prime Minister Minnis announces rental assistance measures

The prime minister today announced that landlords for tenants affected by the COVID-19 crisis must defer 40 percent of rent for the next three months.

Renters will have 12 months to repay the deferred amount.

Landlords can not evict tenants who were in good standing as of March of this year until the end of June.

Landlords can not disconnect utilities of any tenants who were in good standing as of March for the next three months.

He did not specify whether this applies to residential or commercial leases.

Commercial banks have agreed to defer some mortgages for a period of time for landlords who are Bahamian and own properties in The Bahamas.
