University of The Bahamas (UB) has been closely monitoring the spread of COVID-19, which has now become a pandemic impacting more than 100 countries around the world. Reducing the risk of exposure and protecting the health of our University community remains of paramount importance.

Following the guidelines of global health authorities and the Bahamas Ministry of Health, we have increased our vigilance. A Task Force has been appointed to review and upgrade procedures and guidelines, conduct monitoring and make recommendations on a coordinated University response to this new coronavirus. Further, all non-essential University-sponsored travel has been suspended.

Even before this COVID-19 outbreak, UB had been delivering a number of its courses online. In light of current circumstances, faculty have been encouraged to utilize our online mechanisms – supported by the Office of Information Technology – to deliver course content, conduct lectures and communicate with students. Our staff have also been strongly encouraged to use online applications as the preferred mechanism for meetings and to share information.

Currently, our campuses and centres remain operational and classes are continuing. Any future decision regarding our operations will be published through the University’s official communication channels and via the news media.

We have reiterated to our University community that the best defence against COVID-19 is to frequently wash hands with soap and water, use alcohol-based hand sanitizers, properly disinfect surfaces and objects, practice proper hygiene to contain droplets and for persons who have respiratory symptoms not to report to work.

UB remains in close communication with health authorities and government officials and will continue to be vigilant in its monitoring and response.
