Severe Weather Warning Update for South Eleuthera, The Northern Exuma Chain From Norman's Cay North, North Andros and The Berry Islands

THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY HAS ISSUED A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AND WARNING FROM 12:50 PM EST UNTIL 2:50 PM MONDAY 23RD DECEMBER 2019.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING IS IN EFFECT FOR SOUTH ELEUTHERA AND THE NORTHERN EXUMA CHAIN FROM NORMAN’S CAY NORTH AND THEIR ADJACENT WATERS.

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH IS IN EFFECT FOR NORTH ANDROS AND THE BERRY ISLANDS AND THEIR ADJACENT WATERS.

AT 12:50 PM LIGHTNING DETECTION, RADAR AND SATELLITE IMAGERY DEPICTED A LINE OF ORGANIZED THUNDERTSTORMS MOVING EASTWARDS ACROSS THE NORTHERN EXUMA CHAIN NEAR NORMANS CAY TOWARDS SOUTH ELEUTHERA AND A BROAD AREA OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS EXTENDING 31 MILES WEST OF NORTH ANDROS NORTHEASTWARDS TO ABOUT 82 MILES WEST OF CHUB CAY IN THE BERRY ISLANDS.

SOME OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE STRONG TO SEVERE AT TIMES CAUSING STRONG GUSTY WINDS, DANGEROUS LIGHTNING, HEAVY DOWNPOURS, HAIL AND POSSIBLE WATERSPOUT OR TORNADIC ACTIVITY. LOCALIZED FLOODING IS ALSO POSSIBLE DURING THE PASSAGE OF THESE STORMS.

BOATERS IN THE WARNING AREAS SHOULD SEEK SAFE HARBOUR AND RESIDENTS IN THE WARNING AREAS SHOULD STAY INDOORS AND AWAY FROM WINDOWS WHEN CONDITIONS WORSEN. RESIDENTS SHOULD NOT SEEK SHELTER UNDER TREES OR IN WATER AS THESE CAN BECOME LIGHTNING CONDUCTORS.
