Through a generous donation, The Bahamas Disaster Reconstruction Authority has secured a warehouse in Marsh Harbour to function as the main storage facility for Hurricane Dorian-related relief and reconstruction material.

Businessman Chad Sawyer said he donated use of the old Save-A-Lot facility to the Authority for a period in order to contribute to the reconstruction effort.

“This is my home. I have to do what I can to help it come back,” he said.

“All lost some. Some lost all. I know there is a need for it. Rather than let it sit there unoccupied, I chose to do that to help the island and country.”

Clean-up is underway at the 30,000-square-foot portion of the facility at Don McKay Boulevard. It is scheduled to be ready for use at the beginning of the new year.

Katherine Forbes-Smith, Managing Director of the Authority, thanked Mr. Sawyer for his donation.

“Hurricane Dorian caused extraordinary damage on mainland Abaco, its cays and Grand Bahama,” she said.

“The Government is leading a multi-faceted response to this disaster with the private sector and local and international NGOs.

“Mr. Sawyer’s donation will help organise storage and distribution of the large amount of goods, material and equipment that are part of this relief and reconstruction effort.”

The Bahamas Disaster Reconstruction Authority was established by Parliament to spearhead the response to Hurricane Dorian in Grand Bahama and Abaco.

Hurricane Dorian hit Abaco and Grand Bahama in September. With maximum sustained winds of 185 miles per hour, Dorian was the strongest storm to hit The Bahamas.
