Campbell hopes for shelters to be closed by Dec.

The remaining hurricane shelters on New Providence, which have been housing Hurricane Dorian evacuees, will be incrementally deactivated, Minister of Social Services Frankie Campbell said yesterday, adding that his ministry hopes to have them closed by the end of the year. He added that the ministry will provide assistance to help residents with the transition. The number of shelter residents on New Providence decreased to about 600, according to a recent update from the Department of Social Services. In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Dorian, there were 10 government approved shelters on New Providence, however, last month these were consolidated into just two.
