Nurses Praised for their Efforts Following Hurricane Dorian

Minister of Health, Dr. the Hon. Duane Sands had only compliments for the nurses gathered for the 42nd Annual Nurses Educational Conference at the Paul Farquharson Conference Centre, Friday, 22nd November, 2019.

The event was held under the theme, ‘Advancing in Healthcare: Nurses, The Future is Ours.’ During the one-day conference, several topics and issues were discussed including, ‘Revision of the Nurses & Midwives Act; Developing a Preceptor Training Program for Registered Nurses in a Teaching Hospital; Disaster Preparedness: Hindsight 20/20 and Medical Marijuana’.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister praised the nurses for their dedication and hard work to the profession and said that it was because of their strong work ethics and compassion in their work that the medical needs of victims of Hurricane Dorian could be met.

“I wish to thank all of the nurses for providing outstanding service during one of the country’s darkest hours,” said Minister Sands. “Your swift attention in the aftermath of Dorian was greatly appreciated. And I am pleased that you were on-board to help navigate the healthcare system through these turbulent times in our country.”

He said that although it might not always appear to be the case, nurses are revered and respected throughout the country and the world. He said that nurses have made major contributions in the areas of reform, intervention, and prevention of diseases, education and community-based care, among other efforts. Further, for all of their hard work, the Minister said that he looks forward to the day when they would be recognized for their efforts.

“Your compassion, dedication and untiring efforts have not gone unnoticed and so I look forward to the day when you can be recognized and duly compensated for all of your contributions,” he said.
