The Grand Bahama Medical & Dental Association (GBMDA) invites Dr. Kristina Wiers-Shamir, Pediatric Rheumatologist from Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, part of Memorial Healthcare System in South Florida, to the 19th Annual Scientific Educational Conference to be held November 22nd at the Pelican Bay Resort in Freeport, Bahamas.

As every year, the conference will be receiving doctors and specialists from all over the world, to share with their colleagues the current “cutting edge” procedures and treatments in all the many different medical specialties, surrounding this year theme for the conference: “Technology and Medicine making right connections”.

Dr. Kristina Wiers-Shamir, from United States, will be representing her institution in South Florida: Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. This time, Dr. Wiers-Shamir will raise awareness regarding a condition that affects thousands of children in the United States – juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

Most common symptoms of juvenile arthritis are: morning stiffness, joint swelling or redness, fever, rash or limping, just to name a few, because all symptoms can change and evolve.  Diagnosis is based on physical examination, laboratory and imaging studies.  Treating children is not the same as treating adults and juvenile idiopathic arthritis is not the same as adult rheumatoid arthritis.

While “growing pains” can occur in children between 3 to 7 years of age, the pain occurs most often in the evening, on both sides and is relieved by massage and over the counter pain medications. But, when the child keeps complaining, constantly in pain, and no medication seems to work, its time to take the next step and see a rheumatologist because the “growing pain” can be easily confused with juvenile idiopathic arthritis.

If a child or teenager is suffering from juvenile idiopathic arthritis it needs to be under a specialized multidisciplinary team of specialists, to provide comprehensive treatment and support to this difficult diagnosis. Dr. Kristina Wiers-Shamir and the team of doctors at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital understand how important is to give the child and family the appropriate care, going hand in hand with the most advanced technologies for treatments and procedures.

“It's incredibly rewarding to be able to help these children, I also believe that one of the best ways to care for children is to make the family part of the health care team, and I’m looking forward to sharing my experience with my colleagues in the Bahamas”, Dr. Wiers-Shamir stated.
