Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Her Excellency Ismara M. Vargas-Walter is scheduled to demit office this weekend. As she makes the rounds to say goodbye to her colleagues and counterparts in the Foreign Service, she paid a courtesy call at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thursday.

During the courtesy call, Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. Darren Henfield presented Her Excellency with tokens of farewell from The Bahamas. Mrs. Vargas-Walter has been the Cuban Ambassador to The Bahamas for the past almost four years.

Calling The Bahamas 'a friend to Cuba,' the Minister said that The Bahamas has a special friendship with the island nation, and has been grateful for all the support that Cuba has extended to The Bahamas, even most recently with the passing of Hurricane Dorian. Mrs. Vargas-Walter said that The Bahamas has a special place in her heart, and she complimented the Bahamian government for its hardworking foreign service personnel who work tirelessly to foster diplomatic relations with other countries. She also expressed her gratitude that the Bahamas Government has always showed respect for Cuba as a sovereign country. A toasting ceremony at the Ministry was held to bid her farewell.

The Bahamas and Cuba established diplomatic relations on November 30, 1974. Since then, the two countries have signed a number of mutually beneficial agreements and have partnerships in education, culture, health, sports, national security and agriculture.
