Prime Minister Minnis meets with the Commonwealth Secretary-General

Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, QC, assured Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis of the Commonwealth’s commitment to play a role in the rebuilding of Abaco and Grand Bahama in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.

Secretary-General Scotland paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Minnis on Monday 7 October. She is in The Bahamas to view the devastation caused by Hurricane Dorian and relief efforts.

The Secretary-General visited Abaco on Sunday 6 October and said she was humbled by the devastation of homes and lives on the island, and the evidence of resilence.

“There is a lot for us to do,” she said. “We can do this because we are determined to work together.”

Prime Minister Minnis and the Secretary-General discussed the climate change crisis and how The Bahamas and other small island developing states (SIDS) may be able to access climate financing.

The Prime Minister thanked Secretary-General Scotland for recognizing the challenges faced by The Bahamas and for the Commonwealth’s support and commitment to help Abaco and Grand Bahama rebuild.

The Secretary-General is expected to visit Grand Bahama on Tuesday 8 October.
