The Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture has announced that long-standing member of the Scout Association of The Bahamas, John Richard Phillpot, is the Ministry’s 2019 National Youth Month Patron and Lifetime Honouree.

Mr. Phillpot became a Cub Scout in 1946, which marked the beginning of a long relationship with the Scouts organization. He joined the Scout Association of The Bahamas in 1958 as an Assistant Scout Leader and climbed the chain as Scout Leader, Group Leader and Assistant Chief Commissioner for Training in The Bahamas.

As Chief Commissioner from 1974 to 1983, Mr. Phillpot led The Bahamas to full independence within the World Scout Movement from a British Branch to the Scout Association of The Bahamas. He was elected Vice-President of the Inter-American Scout Committee in 1982 and four years later he was elected Trustee. He is presently a member of the Inter-American Scout Foundation, a member of the Standing Committee for the World Honors and Awards Committee of World Scouting.

In 1986 Mr. Phillpot was awarded the 187th Bronze Wolf, the only distinction of the World Organization of the Scout Movement awarded by the World Scout Committee for exceptional services to world scouting. He is also the recipient of the Silver World Award, the Bronze Wolf, the only one in the Caribbean, and many other awards.

For the past 12 years Mr. Phillpot has served as President of the Scout Association of The Bahamas, and every Friday he leads a Scout group at Ebenezer Methodist Church.

Mr. Phillpot said he accepts the honour on behalf of the young men who have passed through his hands in the Scout movement during the past 60 years.

“Thank you all for selecting me, but you didn’t select me, you selected the youth of the country. They are the ones I am working for,” said Mr. Phillpot.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Hon. Lanisha Rolle on September 16, 2019 announced the launch of National Youth Month, to be celebrated in October.
