ALERT #8 ON POTENTIAL TROPICAL CYCLONE NINE ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY, FRIDAY, 13TH SEPTEMBER, 2019, AT 3PM EDT.

…DISTURBANCE IS FORECAST TO BECOME A TROPICAL DEPRESSION OR TROPICAL STORM LATER TODAY…AIR FORCE PLANE STILL INVESTIGATING THE DISTURBANCE…

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR THE ISLANDS OF THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS WHICH INCLUDES: ELEUTHERA, ANDROS, NEW PROVIDENCE, ABACO, GRAND BAHAMA, BIMINI AND THE BERRY ISLANDS.

A TROPICAL STORM WARNING MEANS THAT TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD AFFECT THE MENTIONED ISLANDS WITHIN 36 HOURS.

AT 2PM EDT, THE CENTER OF THE DISTURBANCE WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 25.4° DEGREES NORTH AND LONGITUDE 74.2° DEGREES WEST OR ABOUT 190 MILES EAST OF NEW PROVIDENCE; OR ABOUT 190 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF MARSH HARBOUR, ABACO; OR ABOUT 280 MILES EAST-SOUTHEAST OF FREEPORT, GRAND BAHAMA. THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN MEANDERING DURING THE PAST FEW HOURS, BUT IS EXPECTED TO RESUME A SLOW MOTION TOWARD THE NORTHWEST AND NORTH-NORTHWEST LATER TODAY. ON THE FORECAST TRACK, THE SYSTEM IS ANTICIPATED TO MOVE ACROSS THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS TONIGHT, AND ALONG OR OVER THE EAST COAST OF CENTRAL FLORIDA ON SATURDAY AND SATURDAY NIGHT.

MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 30 MILES PER HOUR WITH HIGHER GUSTS. PRELIMINARY DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE RECONNAISSANCE PLANE INDICATE THAT THE DISTURBANCE IS BECOMING BETTER ORGANIZED AND IS ANTICIPATED THAT A TROPICAL DEPRESSION OR A TROPICAL STORM WILL LIKELY FORM LATER TODAY OR TONIGHT.

TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS COULD BE EXPECTED WITHIN THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS BY LATER TODAY.

THE SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE TOTAL RAINFALL ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES WITH ISOLATED MAXIMUM AMOUNTS OF 6 INCHES OVER THE NORTHWEST BAHAMAS THROUGH SUNDAY. THIS WILL RESULT IN LOCALIZED FLOODING IN LOW-LYING AREAS.

THIS SYSTEM IS NOT EXPECTED TO PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT STORM SURGE.

THE NEXT ALERT WILL BE ISSUED AT 6PM EDT ON FRIDAY 13TH SEPTEMBER, 2019.
