Nassau, The Bahamas –The Government of The Bahamas signed a contract totaling $413.860 with Nick Dean, principal of Integrated Building Services to provide supervision services for the North Acklins road rehabilitation project. The road works are expected to contribute to the efficient movement of motorists throughout North Acklins, Public Works and Transport Minister the Hon. Neko C. Grant said at a press conference on Wednesday, June 23.
“External assistance with supervision was necessary with regard to testing of the paving material and the close monitoring of the road construction process. This is being undertaken to ensure that the road works meet the Ministry’s standards and to ensure that the Bahamian people receive value for their money,” said Minister Grant. In attendance was Colin Higgs, permanent secretary; John Canton, director; Caldwell Pratt, deputy director; Livingston Forbes, chief architect; Robert Garraway, engineer and Larry Bastian, quantity surveyor.
In December 2009, a $7,104, 993.73 was awarded to Bethell’s Trucking and Heavy Equipment Company for the reconstruction of three miles of approximately 36 miles of roads between Spring Point Airport and Atwood Harbour. The contract also made provision for the resurfacing and patching of the remaining length of road. The works are co-financed through an agreement with the 9th European Development Fund of the European Union.
The EU will provide $3,675,000 toward the project and the balance is being funded by the Government of The Bahamas. The project is expected to be completed in 12 months. Mr. Grant congratulated IBS on the award of the contract and said he looks forward to the satisfactory completion of the road works. Mr. Dean said his company is “honoured” to participate in the project for North Acklins. He said the project serves a dual role as it affords Bahamians opportunities in employment and the new infrastructure enhances and improves the island.
“I am grateful that we have been afforded the opportunity to be greatly involved in the design and now to continue to be involved in supervision of the works,” Mr. Dean said.
