Doctors strike at PMH

Today saw a strike of the doctors at the Princess Margaret Hospital following the Hospitals Authority’s withdrawal of their agreement for funding. The initial dispute is said to have involved the doctors taking issue with holiday pay, and this removal of the agreement made has motivated doctors to follow through on their strike threat. The scene outside PMH today was one of extreme frustration, anger and confusion with hoards of people crowding the entrance to the hospital to voice their dissent, with one incensed individual proclaiming, “we gone do this until we get results!”

This is not a new issue or particularly unexpected outcome of the dispute, as government funding and the allocation of its budget has long been a point of contention. In fact it is a wonder that the issue remained unresolved and effectively unaddressed until now. The strike looks to continue until the Hospitals Authority injects the funds initially promised.
