Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert A. Minnis visited the campus of The University of The Bahamas (UB) to get first-hand knowledge from students taking advantage of the Government’s financial initiative for free tertiary education.

The initiative kicked in on Monday, August 19, 2019, the first day of classes. The Prime Minister accompanied by Dr. Rodney Smith, President of UB, toured several areas where students spoke about their enrolment experience and their area of study.

The Prime Minister visited the GRT Campbell Small Island Sustainability Research Complex, which houses Climate and Biogeography, Architecture and Culture, and Marine Biology classes. He also visited the Portia M. Smith Student Services Building.

A majority of those students are recipients of the Government’s programme aimed at providing free education for qualifying students to study at UB and at the Bahamas Technical & Vocational Institute.

The Prime Minister also enlightened the students, particularly from the Family Islands that the Government would pay homeowners in New Providence $500 per month for their housing accommodations while enrolled at UB.

The prime Minister touted this as a “revolution in education” that will enhance the educational prospects for thousands of young Bahamians in the future. He said that the initiative would also enable parents to save thousands of dollars that can be used for other purposes.

Students were encouraged to log on to the UB Housing register portal to search for proper housing accommodations.

The Prime Minister encouraged the students to be successful in their area of studies and career choices, as the country is growing and need qualified professionals.

By their show of hands and interactions with the Prime Minister, the students demonstrated that they were thankful for the opportunity to obtain free education. They also expressed concerns, which the Prime Minister said he would discuss at the Cabinet level.
