SERVING TOGETHER TO END HUNGER

They donned hairnets, aprons, gloves and warm smiles – their mission – to feed 3,500 people! Twenty staffers of CIBC FirstCaribbean recently teamed up with the Bahamas National Feeding Network to take part in their national feeding programme.

The partnership between the BFN and CIBC FirstCaribbean’s Special Loans, Corporate and Investment Banking units was a result of the bank’s Adopt-A-Cause programme, which encourages staff to identify community projects in their immediate surroundings in which they can become involved. Together they purchased, prepared, packaged and distributed meals to several communities in New Providence.

Tonia Cartwright, Manager of Sales Support, CIBC FirstCaribbean Corporate Banking, said, “We decided to adopt this cause given the challenges of unemployment and homelessness in our country. We have seen an increase in the number of people who can no longer afford a meal. They rely on non-profit organizations like the BFN to survive, and we wanted to do our part to make a positive difference and give back to the communities CIBC FirstCaribbean serves.”

Employees also went out into the communities to help with the distribution of meals at various drop off points.

BFN Executive Director Philip Smith said, “We were very pleased to have CIBC FirstCaribbean assist us with our efforts to put an end to hunger. We hope this experience will sensitize them to the serious hunger issue in The Bahamas so they will continue to support the cause, and we also hope their example will encourage more participation and support from corporate Bahamas.”

The Bahamas National Feeding Network is a non-profit organization that has been battling hunger in The Bahamas since its launch in 2013. Dozens of volunteers prepare, cook and plate thousands of meals on Thursdays and Sundays at the organization’s Fox Hill Headquarters. Distribution of meals and vouchers happens through churches, soup kitchens and other feeding centres in New Providence and on the Family Islands.
