Bridesmaids - Movie Review

I must admit, I was pretty excited to see this after I saw the trailer and the movie, save for a few misses, really delivered.

I haven’t been a huge fan of SNL since Kristen Wiig joined the cast so I wasn’t too sure what to expect from her but I do enjoy Maya Rudolph, SNL alumnus, and Melissa McCarthy, Gilmore Girls and knowing they can bring the funny was all I needed.

The story goes that Annie (Wiig) and Lillian (Rudolph) are lifelong friends and while Annie barely has her life sorted, after her bakery fails, Lillian is about to get married and wants her to be the maid of honour.

To save face, Annie tries not to wallow in her financial straits and perks up to tackle the wedding plans and duties head-on.

Upstaging Annie’s efforts is Helen (Rose Byrne) who is, pretty much, perfect and organized in every way Annie isn’t and is also unashamedly gunning to get the maid of honour title and plotting to squeeze Annie out of the picture to be Lillian’s go-to friend.

The rest of the bridal party fleshes out the cast with Wendi McLendon-Covey, Melissa McCarthy and Ellie Kemper.

All of the ladies bring it with their parts. One thing I love is awkward-situation-comedy and this movie really delivers on that front. The clincher is that it’s all female shebang and, with one or two misses, it brings about the same caliber of funny as The Hangover.

The writing was pretty decent in this too. As things spiral further out of control we get very robust makeups of the main characters, you leave with a full idea of who they were.

Ideally, being a wedding movie, you will get some romance and love-story tie-ins but they don’t detract too much from the core of the plot or the nature of the genre. I love how we see scenes like the opening one a lot in movies but rarely from the female’s perspective. The way it was executed would leave you with a bit of introspection, which was pretty cool to me.

I don’t have many hang-ups about this movie. The humour may not be for everyone and a lot of it can go over your head but the supplementary scenes and running jokes will more than make up for it.

As much as I enjoyed and appreciated the women taking charge in this one I respected it even more for keeping it that way. You have a lot of movies that start off with this premise only to ante up the rest of the movie to a set of male leads.

A lot of moments in this movie will make you question your sense of humour too, especially if you find yourself laughing at the most uneasy and borderline disgusting scenes.

It’s really all good fun though. I’d recommend watching with a group of friends or people that you know would appreciate a decent laugh.

The jokes can be a lot more ‘Comedy Central’ than ‘Def Jam/Comicview’, per se. But you shouldn’t feel too alienated if one quip happens to slide over your head.

Did you watch this yet? Planning to? Tell me what your take was in the comments.

Thanks for reading, see you soon!
