Overwhelmed by hundreds who turned out for hot-off-the-grill steaks to support the organisation that serves up to 5,000 hot meals a week to ease the pain of hunger, the Bahamas Feeding Network announced this week it will move its summer fund-raiser steak-out to Montagu Park July 13.

“They say you can never have too much of a good thing,” said Bahamas Feeding Network (BFN) Executive Director Philip Smith.

“We love a hungry crowd, but we found that when it comes to holding major events like our steak-outs at the little cottage called Moseff House on Fox Hill Road that serves as our kitchen and main distribution center for hot meals is just too small.

So we are very pleased to announce that this July’s summer sizzle will be at Montagu from noon to 6 pm on Saturday, July 13.”

This year’s event will include music along with a menu of steak, chicken or fish. Tickets are available through any of the member churches or at Mosseff House next to the police station on Fox Hill Road.

“Royal Caribbean International cruise line has been so good to us, supplying all the food that we cook for the entire year, an incredibly generous gift,” said Smith.

“But in order to maintain the level of support that we have been providing to the network of churches, soup kitchens and feeding centres, we still have expenses ancilary to purchase containers, utensils, huge pots and pans, cooking gas and food vouchers.

Founded in 2013, the brainchild of H.E. Frank Crothers, BFN has grown from assisting 13 churches to providing food vouchers or hot meals to more than 100 other civic or church-based organisations which help in the fight against hunger.

Operated almost entirely by volunteers, the Feeding Network preps, cooks and plates up to 5,000 hot meals a week, often providing the only food a needy person may have on a given day.

Mrs. Patricia Minnis serves as Patron of the organisation.

“Hunger affects approximately one in every seven people in The Bahamas,” explained Smith. “It is a quiet tragedy filled with daily pain and struggle, an ache that we know we can ease.

That is what keeps us going and motivates our wonderful volunteers, just knowing they are making a difference in people’s lives.

So we really hope that we will have the largest turn-out ever for the July 13 steak, chicken and fish-out.”

Crowds overwhelmed the small cottage on Fox Hill Road where the Bahamas Feeding Network serves up to 5,000 hot meals a week, treating community men, women and children on Sundays and distributing to churches, feeding centres and soup kitchens twice a week. 

Volunteers come in all sizes – Students from Lyford Cay International School assisted in a food distribution at Gambier, an outreach activity of the Bahamas Feeding Network that is striving to wipe out hunger which now affects more than 40,000 people in The Bahamas.
