Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) is excited to announce the first Thomson Trust Scholar. Grade 10 student Heather Williams has received the award which will allow her to join the rigorous Diploma Programme at LCIS, one of four graduation pathways for Grade 11 and 12 students.
Canadian Peter N Thomson deeply loved The Bahamas and believed in the development of our community and nation through education.
Recently, the school was extremely fortunate to receive a significant gift from the Peter N Thomson Family Trust as recommended by Mr Andrew Raenden. ‘We are so grateful to the family for this incredible gift.
The impact that this gift will have on our school and the education landscape of the country is incredible,’ remarked Principal Dr Stacey Bobo.
‘The Trust has created a lasting impact, making even more scholarships available to high achieving local students to attend LCIS.
We are so honoured to carry forward this history and this legacy as we impact the education of so many children.’
The generous $1.5M gift to the Endowment for Scholarships and Financial Aid is the largest single gift to the endowment ever received by the school and has more than doubled the fund. ‘This investment in scholarships is for the long term.
The Trust’s gift provides sustainability to our programme as the income from the investment gives us to the ability to fund local students year after year in perpetuity,’ said Development Director, Dr Joanna Paul.
Ms Williams, the first student to benefit from this scholarship, transfers from St Augustine’s College and will join Grade 11 in the fall.
An accomplished scholar and athlete, Ms Williams is excited about the school’s science programme and hopes it will be a platform for her goals of attending a top university and becoming either a marine biologist or environmental scientist.
Jacqueline Williams, Heather’s mother, is also looking forward to the future opportunities and stated, “I know the school will be a launchpad for Heather’s future goals and I know Heather will also contribute to the school in so many ways.”

In gaining admission to LCIS, Ms Williams joins a diverse and supportive community that features students and staff form over 41 countries who speak 17 different languages.
She will have the opportunity to participate in one of the 50 free co-curricular activities that include a diverse array of programmes including dance, robotics and snorkelling.
As a student-athlete and leader, she could have the opportunity to play on LCIS’s championship football team, travel domestically and internationally for academic projects, or join the GGYA programme. And when Heather graduates from LCIS, she will have the chance to attend top schools around the world.
In the past few years, LCIS students have gained admission to Yale, Georgetown Stanford, Oxford and the University of Toronto thanks to LCIS’s rigorous academic courses, highly qualified staff and specialised college counselling.
With the opening of the new campus in Fall 2020, there will be even more opportunities for current and future students including new facilities, expanded programmes and more scholarships.
