Hundreds participated in the Annual REACH Fun Run/Walk held at 6am on Saturday, April 27. The race raised much-needed funds for the non-profit organization, which raises awareness for autism and related challenges, as well as provides resources and support for Bahamian families faced with the neurobiological disorder.

Proceeds from the Fun Run will be used to fund REACH’s ongoing initiatives, including the upcoming annual summer camp for children affected by autism. The REACH Summer Camp is free-of-cost to participants, and targets children who have had little to no exposure to the speech and behaviour therapies required to counteract the effects of the disorder. Early intervention has been shown to improve outcomes for persons on the autism spectrum.

The route for the Fun Run started at Montagu Beach and continued West to the Sir Sidney Poitier Bridge, over the bridge to Paradise Island and back to Montagu Beach.

The first 200 finishers all received ribbons, and medals were awarded to the first, second and third place winners in 96 categories, separated by age group and gender.

RUBiS Bahamas Limited served as the presenting sponsor for the event, providing gift bags to all participants. “RUBiS is committed to social and educational development in The Bahamas. As a corporate citizen, we know that the role we play in supporting organizations like REACH is fundamental to their long-term ability to positively impact our community,” said O’Niel Bain, RUBiS Bahamas Marketing Coordinator and REACH Board Member.

Dwayne Gibson, Chairman of REACH, said "We remain grateful to RUBiS Bahamas for their consistent support and resources as our organization advocates for this much-neglected constituent of families affected by autism in our community. This Fun Run/Walk brought awareness and attention to our cause and RUBiS Bahamas each year continues to demonstrate corporate responsibility through its partnership with REACH”.

RUBiS has been a substantial supporter of REACH for several years. The company has held a position on the REACH Board for the past 2 years, fostering an even deeper understanding of the organization’s needs and goals. “We greatly value the ability to work more closely with REACH over the past few years to ensure that their vision for a more inclusive society is achieved. We look forward to continuing our partnership with REACH for years to come,” said Mr. Bain.

After the race, participants enjoyed Dasani water and free samples of Lucozade thanks to Coca Cola Bahamas and Bahamas Wholesale Agencies.

The public can continue to assist REACH by donating resources - both monetary and in-kind - as well as by supporting REACH fundraising events or volunteering their time to REACH programmes.

REACH will close out its annual Autism Awareness Month activities with a Spectrum of Jazz event to be held on Saturday May 11th at 7pm at the Balmoral Club. The event will feature fine jazz music, dinner, and silent auction. Tickets may be purchased from the REACH Office at the Queen’s College campus on Village Road. Persons can contact the REACH Office at 328-4123 or reachautismbahamas@yahoo.com.
