SC McPherson Plus CWCO Adds Up to the Perfect Equation

SC McPherson hosted its 8th annual Math Competition, welcoming more participating students and schools than ever before thanks in part to sponsorship from Consolidated Water (Bahamas) Ltd. (CWCO).

All junior high schools throughout New Providence and the Family Islands were invited to compete in a game of “Math Jeopardy” during the first week of April at SC McPherson’s auditorium; and, enabled by their consistent partnership with CWCO, this year the school hosted teams from nine other secondary institutions.

The competition winner was SC McPherson, followed by TA Thompson and then LW Young. Ninth grader Torian Carey, who was on the winning team and has competed in the competition three years straight, said, “I feel like I finally accomplished something.

From our team coming in second when I competed in grade seven, to placing third when I was in grade eight, to finally winning first place in grade nine – it feels amazing.

“I’m happy more schools got to participate this year and experience the chance to win and have fun, because every year that I’ve been doing this, it’s been exciting and hilarious.”

Founder of the competition and SC McPherson Math teacher Kiffany Daxon said, “We’re glad to be doing this because it brings awareness to numeracy and math.

Students often get the chance to do spelling bees and speech competitions, but there was nothing for math.

So SC McPherson decided we would showcase math because we have some really good mathematicians in our schools.

“The sponsorship from CWCO means the world to us because we’re able to give the students meaningful gifts such as tablets and computers for their hard work. We’re also able to decorate and make the space look amazing, so it creates a fun and exciting atmosphere.

All of that takes money, and it’s really been a pleasure being able to expand the competition because of their donation.”

CWCO General Manager Bryan Russell said, “We think it’s wonderful that SC McPherson is giving these high school students an opportunity to show off their math skills.

Math is an important component of many industries and fields, including our own, and we’re happy to see all of the bright, young talent the country has to offer in this subject area; and we’re also happy to help reward their studies and highlight their accomplishments.”
