Governor General of The Bahamas Her Excellency the Most Hon. Dame Marguerite Pindling said there is much to be thankful for during this time of year.

“The Christmas season always wells up in our hearts a spirit of love, joy and peace, and so, as we celebrate, we have the wonderful opportunities to engage meaningfully with each other in living out the meaning of Christmas,” she explained during the 20th Annual Governor-General’s Visit to the Grand Bahama Health Services, Wednesday, December 5, 2018.

“In these contexts, we have to remember to be thankful for all the blessings which have been received, and here in Grand Bahama, and all across our archipelago, we have much to be thankful for. One major example is that, unlike last year, we have been spared the ravages of hurricanes, for which we must be grateful.”

Acknowledging the volunteer work done by the Grand Bahama Health Services, the Governor General said, “Volunteerism is a concept which uplifts those who serve and those who receive, and this important programme must be encouraged and made good use of. I am sure that this facility, and the wider community appreciate the services provided by the volunteers who so kindly give of themselves to help others.”

The Governor General thanked the volunteers for their service and encouraged them to not only continue, but develop the concept further. She noted that the administrator and members of the executive committee work to provide quality health care to the Grand Bahama community and said they do not go unnoticed.

“In particular, I am informed that the philanthropic programmes in which you are engaged serve as witness to your holistic approach in meeting the needs of the men and women, boys and girls who seek the good services offered here.

“It is this balance of caring and compassion which brings confidence and appreciation to this facility, and so I encourage you to continue the excellent work, meeting the challenges which the future will bring with the same dedication and fortitude which is the hallmark of your work.”

She continued, “The Grand Bahama Health Services is to be commended for maintaining the high level of service, and I am confident that you will continue to use every opportunity to improve the delivery of excellent health care service to those in need, so that Grand Bahama will be able to boast of the quality of services provided.”

Following the Governor General’s address, retirees who have served 30 or more years to the Grand Bahama Health Services were presented with plaques, and yellow balloons were released to honour those employees who have passed away this year.

The Governor General acknowledged the passing of two staff members, Lawanda Lewis-Smith, Senior Dental Assistant and Sera Seymour, Head Cook. She extended condolences to the staff and families.

She then toured the medical facility, stopping to speak with both patients and nurses.
