Blaze engulfs Marshall Road dump site

A large blaze at the Marshall Road Derelict Vehicle Disposal site engulfed large portions of the dump site, destroyed dozens of plants at the neighboring nursery and threatened the Anatol Rodgers Junior High School.
Firefighters spent hours battling the blaze at the site yesterday evening. This is the third time the dump caught on fire in the past four years. There were previous fires in 2008 and in 2010.
When The Nassau Guardian arrived on the scene, billows of black smoke blanketed the area and crowds of onlookers and area residents gathered near the site.
According to Police Press Liaison Officer Chrislyn Skippings, fire officials got the call about 5 p.m. yesterday.
