Iceland is the most visited country in the world, according to a new survey by TravelMag.com, which looked at annual visitor numbers in countries around the globe and compared them against the size of their respective populations.

Numbers for visitor arrivals used for the survey were taken from a report released by the United Nations Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in August 2018. For countries where no official UNWTO data was available, alternative sources were used. For the purposes of the survey, only sovereign nations with a population of at least 100,000 were taken into account.

With a total of 6,600 annual visitors per thousand citizens, the Nordic island nation of Iceland leads the ranking. Another island, Malta, located in the central Mediterranean, is the runner up with 5,300 visitors, while the idyllic Caribbean archipelago of the Bahamas completes the podium with 3,800 visitors.

Other European countries to feature in the top ten include Croatia, Austria, Cyprus, Montenegro and Estonia.

At the opposite end of the scale, Yemen, Libya and Somalia are the least visited counties, with less than one visitor per 1,000 citizen. While no UNWTO data was available for these destinations, tourist arrivals are close to zero according to independent sources.

The following table shows the most and least visited countries in the world based on the total number of tourists per 1,000 citizens.
