The 23 rd Annual Grand Bahama Regatta & Homecoming Festival will see sailing enthusiasts from around the country take to the high seas for two days of friendly competition. The event, being held under the theme “Build your dreams and sail the sea” will also feature the best in Bahamian entertainment food and culture for a family friendly experience.

The Grand Bahama Regatta & Homecoming will be held this weekend, from Friday to Saturday, and will start with a Skipper’s Welcome Party at Out Da Sea on Friday at 7:00pm. Races will start on Saturday at 10 and then celebrations continue for a ‘Rock The Bahamas’ concert at Taino Beach, with a Sunday “Intoxication” Beach Party at Pirates Cove.

At a press conference to formally announce plans for this year’s event, members of the committee announced a new format for the festival, departing from tradition, opting instead for an invitation styled event.

“We have done something a little different” said Chervita Campbell, Chairman of the GB Regatta Committee, “by doing things invitation style, we’ve allowed independent boat owners join instead of only boats from sailing clubs within The Bahamas.”

The Committee is expecting 10 sloops from various islands: Exuma (Termite and Dream Girl), Acklins (Uncle John), Blackpoint (H20, Crazy Partner and Revelation 3:16), Long Island (Sacrifice), Stuart Manor (Sweet Island Girl, and Golden Girl), and Mayaguana (Jacob’s Ladder).

Adding to the fun will be young sailors from the Grand Bahama Sailing Club who have been participating over the years. “This year will be the first time the junior sailors are on the water in the E Class Sloops, and not their standard Optis,” explained Rashema Ingraham, Regatta Committee member. “There also will be a twist with this division, all boats will be representing the constituencies of Grand Bahama. With 4 races on Saturday and Sunday.”

The Regatta committee has also partnered with a number of key sponsors to pull off this year’s festival; including the Ministry of Tourism who came on board as an annual sponsor.

“We really want to encourage everyone to come out and support the event” said Mr. Nuvolari Chotoosingh, Manager of Niche Markets in the Ministry of Tourism. “We’re happy to be on board to help promote domestic tourism, and promote Grand Bahama Island.
