During a week filled with activities highlighting Maritime Week, former Sandilands Primary School student, Captain Dwain Hutchinson attended a special assembly in his honour.
In attendance for the occasion, was Minister of Transport and Local Government, the Hon. Frankie Campbell, who told the students that the Captain was an example of a person who had achieved international success but whose beginnings were very humble.
“Captain Hutchinson came from this same school community and has enjoyed worldwide success,” said Minster Campbell. “I came here today to tell you that you, too, can become rich and famous like him one day in the maritime industry as many opportunities are available for you in this field.”
Mr. Campbell said that Maritime Week was held to highlight the variety of career opportunities available in the industry, many of which some may not have considered before.
He explained that the average cruise ship carried up to 5,000 passengers and up to 2,000 crewmembers and many choose to use The Bahamas as their official flag carrier.
“Maritime is a great place be with great pay and wonderful benefits and exposure to the world.”
In January of this year, the Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) appointed Captain Dwain Hutchinson as Acting Managing Director/CEO of the BMA following the retirement of Commodore Davy Rolle. Captain Hutchinson is a Master Mariner bringing over 30 years of shipping experience and knowledge to his new post. He has served in several management positions within the BMA, and internationally.
Captain Hutchinson was a former student of Sandilands Primary, L.W. Young and St. Anne’s.
He said that he chose to highlight Sandilands Primary because that is where it all began. He also expressed his gratitude for being chosen as the honouree.
Also delivering remarks were: Member of Parliament for Fox Hill, Shonell Ferguson; Senator the Hon. Fredrick Mitchell; Chairman (BMA) Denise Lewis-Johnson; Maritime Week Honouree, Peter Goulandris; and Ship Owner’s Association President, Kenneth Engstrom.
